Sunday, November 22
On Sunday, November 22 we welcome to the Rector’s Forum Thomas Saenz — nationally recognized civil rights attorney and President and General Counsel to MALDEF: Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
His long career includes leading the successful challenge to California’s unconstitutional Proposition 187 and litigating numerous civil rights cases in the areas of immigrants’ rights, education, employment, and voting rights. Earlier this month he helped lead the challenge to House Speaker Ryan’s editorial stating that, under his leadership, the U.S. House of Representatives will not consider any immigration reform legislation during the final year of President Obama’s presidency.
“Refusing to act on needed legislation out of pique is not leadership; Speaker Ryan’s refusal to consider needed immigration reform legislation betrays his true agenda. Publishing reckless allegations that the well-established executive power of prosecutorial discretion is somehow illegitimate for this President prioritizes political gamesmanship over national service.” — Thomas A. Saenz
