An exciting new addition to the All Saints Church musical family is “Vox Cambiata”– a vocal ensemble under the direction of Jenny Tisi, Director of Children’s and Youth Music. Here’s the story:
“I decided to start this new ensemble after bringing a barbershop quartet to come and work with our Trouveres males,” Jenny said. “The workshop was a great success – and seeing how much the boys enjoyed working together, I asked them if they wanted to continue the group. Unanimously, they said, “YES!!”
“At that same time, there was an interesting discussion going on in an online Choir Director’s Forum on how other directors are handling the vocal placement of transgendered youth in their choir programs — specifically for choirs labeled “Women’s Choir” or “Men’s Ensemble.”
“It became a really interesting debate and discussion – and it got me thinking: what am I going to name this new ensemble? It really is a whole new world. When traditional voice placements for male voices are gender specific, how do I describe this group without complicating access for transgender youth?”
“The ensemble is voiced for Tenors, Baritones and Basses, but some of my younger males — whose voices haven’t changed yet — were interested in being in the ensemble. Since all of the boys were either going to have a voice change soon, are in the process or at the tail end of the full change, I settled on the name “Vox Cambiata” — which is Latin for ‘Voice Change.’”
Vox Cambiata currently has 16 members and rehearses every other Sunday. They will be singing several times through the year and making their debut on December 13th at the Advent 3 Evening Service and then on Sunday morning, December 20th at the 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. services. Join us in giving thanks for the commitment of these young singers – and for their director, responding this “whole new world” with sensitivity and creativity.
