Children and Youth Choir Program

Kyla McCarrel and Lora McManus

I joined the All Saints Youth Choirs when I was four years old and attended fourteen years of weekly rehearsals and early Sunday morning services. This program was my first introduction to the world of classical choral music, and I know that without it, I would not be where I am today. I will be starting my senior year at Chapman University this fall, with a double major in Music Education and Vocal Performance.

I truly believe that it was my years in the All Saints choirs that inspired me to choose to continue with music as my career. The years of rehearsals inspired in me a love of teaching music, and performing as well. The program taught me what it means to be dedicated, how to work hard, and how to work in a group to achieve a common goal. I learned perseverance in times of hardship, and found strength in the music to push forward. But what I learned above all else is a love and appreciation for music that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

“Whoever you are and wherever you find yourself on your journey of faith, you are welcome here.” This mantra, expressed throughout every aspect of All Saints, epitomizes atmosphere of community, mutual support, and acceptance in choir. To me, the choir program served as an environment for me to grow as a person, discover and hone my love of music and singing, and make lifelong friends. I have had so many incredible opportunities throughout these past several years in the choir program — from being exposed to challenging and beautiful musical literature, to working directly with composers, to learning to sight read — and I know that I will carry the skills and values I have learned to my future choral endeavors and beyond. Some of my favorite choir memories have been the two-day Trouvéres retreat; the spring concert this year where we closed with Some Nights, complete with a drum line; one Sunday, during my first year in Trouvéres, when the entire congregation got up and danced while we sang; and weekly rehearsals that always involved laughter a mist the business of prepping and perfecting new pieces. Above all, it is through the choir program that I have found a home, a family, and a community that will receive me with open arms.
